World-renowned base-jumper Jeb Corliss is lucky to be alive after clipping the face of South Africa's Table Mountain and plunging 60 metres to the ground.
The 35-year-old American daredevil known as "The Birdman" (maybe not anymore), broke both legs during the accident on Monday morning, which was being filmed by US network HBO.
Corliss sometimes wears the wingsuit during jumps to lengthen the time taken to fall before releasing his parachute.
Corliss can be seen in video of the ill-fated jump leaping from the Cape Town mountain in a wingsuit, alongside cameraman Jeff Nebelkopf.
But as he disappears into the distance, Corliss can be seen clipping the edge of a boulder, sending him into a spinning plunge towards the ground.
"Fuck, he's gone down," a witness can be heard saying in the video.
A spokeswoman for Table Mountain, Merle Collins, said Corliss fell more than 61m from the 1066m-high mountain before landing on a sloped side known as Africa Face, the Telegraph reports.
"He managed to release his emergency chute and we believe he would have died without it," she said.
